What is synergy? How does it operate within a contemporary media environment primarily run by large conglomorates? Give one example of synergy (you can use an example from the present if you wish).
As described in the Hilmes article and lecture, synergy is, “the working together of various components so that they can produce an effect that neither could do alone.” Put in simpler terms, I look at synergy as being two or more groups working together that are indirectly related to create mutually beneficial relationships. A conglomerate company is the combination or merger of two or more companies that have different business goals or produces somewhat different products. Synergy works best in these conglomerate environments because there are two or more powerhouse companies merging together to create and even bigger company that has other outlets to promote products or services. There are many mergers that have produced successful examples of synergy such as the Disney and ABC, and Disney and Pixar. However there have been some very unsuccessful mergers as well such as AOL and Time Warner. A current example of synergy would be during commercials on the ABC network there are commercials that cross-promotes for a new Disney movie that is coming out soon. Another more hidden example would be the use of Disney channel stars being dancers on the ABC show, Dancing with the Stars. This is promotion for the Disney channel stars, and for Disney itself.
